Guidelines

You can send submissions using the form below, or you can email them to submissions@chamberfour.com. Please include your name and a little information about your piece(s).

C4 Book Review Submissions

First, you might want to read a few reviews and look over what we’re trying to accomplish with them. If you think you have a Great Read candidate on your hands, read the criteria for that.

Then, there are some technical and formatting things to keep in mind when writing a book review for Chamber Four:
  • Aim for 300-1500 words (1-5 pages in a word processor), but we’re not too stringent about it.
  • Keep it relatively informal; don’t feel like you need to write an academic essay.  However, good grammar and crisp writing will be appreciated.
  • Each review should include: The title and author of the book; the publisher and year of publication; ratings on a scale of 10 of Language, Entertainment, and Depth; and two or three books which are similar to the one being reviewed.
  • You also have the option to include a fourth rating category. This can be anything you want, but should tell the reader of your review something salient about the book, something the author has either done well or poorly.
  • The book you review should have been published relatively recently, within the past year. If the book is older than that, it should be a positive review. So feel free to reread and recommend your favorite books, but it’s not productive to dredge up old books nobody’s heard of and tell people not to read them.

C4 Magazine Submissions

We’re really excited about the launch of our electronic magazine. It’s been a long time coming and it’s going to be great. Our magazine doesn’t employ themes, we simply want to collect a bunch of stories, poems, essays, and artwork that appeal to us and share it with like-minded readers. We are currently looking for submissions in all forms, namely:

  • fiction (short stories, flash fiction, novellas)
  • non-fiction (personal essays, memoir excerpts, travel writing)
  • poetry (traditional, experimental)
  • digital visual art

Please submit only one prose piece or up to three poems at a time. Extra submissions will be likely go unread (we are a courageous few, but a few all the same—if you think yours is a special case, please email us telling us why). We shall do our best to respond within two months, however, we can’t promise how soon we’ll get back to you—just that we will. We’re always happy to respond to your email inquiries as quickly as possible.

We’ll accept simultaneous submissions, but if your work is accepted for publication elsewhere, please let us know right away (and congratulations!).

Only previously unpublished works will be considered for publication. We are employing rolling submissions, but works received prior to November 1, 2010 will receive priority for the first issue.

For both poetry and prose submissions, please make sure your name appears on every page, in a header or whatever. For prose submissions, please number your double-spaced pages (starting with 1, even for excerpts), and write something like “the end” at then end so we know we got the whole thing. It should go without saying, but please be sure to proofread your work.

When you send us something, please tell us if your piece is fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, etc. (even mention the genre if you’d like), so we can make sure it’s read by an appropriate reader.

If you are interested in submitting artwork, shoot us an email at submissions@chamberfour.com with the specifications and a brief description of your work, and we’ll arrange a way to check it out. 2-D art only (obviously) and we probably won’t put your work in the ebook version of the magazine with the writing, since that will be black and white and low-res. But we’ll figure something out.

Submissions will only be accepted via email. You can send them, or any questions you might have, to submissions@chamberfour.com.
