According to Silicon Alley:
[...] it costs the Times about twice as much money to print and deliver the newspaper over a year as it would cost to send each of its subscribers a brand new Amazon Kindle instead.
Of course, there are some problems with actually doing this, which Silicon Alley readily stipulates, but the point is clear: publishers should be encouraging ereader adoption because epublishing costs are much less than print publishing costs.
I’m still waiting to hear a single argument, or even excuse, for why the publishing industry isn’t encouraging ereading.
