Buying a Million Kindles Would Save the NY Times Money

According to Silicon Alley:

[...] it costs the Times about twice as much money to print and deliver the newspaper over a year as it would cost to send each of its subscribers a brand new Amazon Kindle instead.

Of course, there are some problems with actually doing this, which Silicon Alley readily stipulates, but the point is clear: publishers should be encouraging ereader adoption because epublishing costs are much less than print publishing costs.

I’m still waiting to hear a single argument, or even excuse, for why the publishing industry isn’t encouraging ereading.
